Laos government will halt crypto businesses deemed inactive

On Nov. 9, the Laos government announced it would halt business activities, levy fines and potentially revoke licenses of companies that do not meet their commitments or show progress in cryptocurrency mining and trading agreements in what is considered an inactive status. At the same time, outstanding fees from crypto operators owed to the state reached a U.S. equivalent of $20 million, according to Laos Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone. A lack of progress During the proceedings of the sixth ordinary session of the National Assembly’s ninth legislature, Siphandone acknowledged a lack of progress from the two companies. The delay in fee payments to the state was attributed to the sluggishness of certain entities, while numerous investors demonstrated noteworthy advancements, contributing significantly to the state budget. Buying Bitcoin is preferable to BTC mining in most circumstances — Analysis

Image
Data suggests that investors are better off buying spot Bitcoin then attempting to mine it, unless the market is in a mega bull run. While intuitively, mining Bitcoin may appear like a highly profitable endeavor, research suggests otherwise.  After discovering Bitcoin, most users go down the rabbit hole and consider whether it is better to mine or buy Bitcoin directly. They usually give up due to the cost and rigor of running ASIC miners, regulatory uncertainty, and the lack of technical expertise. Hypothetically, if one overcomes the above challenges, they could enjoy advantages such as full autonomy over their operations and diversification of their crypto investment via physical hardware instead of directly purchasing Bitcoin, but the entire venture can be risky and labor intensive. To mine, or not to mine BTC? Analysis by Bitcoin (BTC) mining data firm, Hashrate Index, suggested that “buying bitcoin is preferable to mining it in most circumstances.” Jaran Mellurad, a Bitcoin minin...

'Unworkable' bill to ban blockchain immutability is introduced in Illinois

Image
Florida-based lawyer Drew Hinkes described the bill as “the most unworkable state law” related to Blockchain and cryptocurrency that he has ever seen. A recently introduced Illinois Senate Bill has been ridiculed by the crypto community over its "unworkable" plans to force blockchain miners and validators to do "impossible things" — such as reversing transactions if ordered to do so by a state court. The Senate Bill was quietly introduced into the Illinois legislature on Feb. 9 by Illinois Senator Robert Peters but appears to have been only recently noticed by Florida-based lawyer Drew Hinkes who discussed the bill in a Twitter post on Feb. 19. The bill titled the “Digital Property Protection and Law Enforcement Act,” would authorize the courts — upon a valid request from the Attorney General or a State's Attorney that is made pursuant to the laws of Illinois — to order a blockchain transaction that is executed via a smart contract to be altered or rescinded. ...

Bitcoin miner Greenidge cuts NYDIG debt from $72M to $17M

Despite restructuring into a hosting firm for Bitcoin mining, Greenidge still owns about 10,000 miners, maintaining a capacity of 1.1 EH/s. Bitcoin (BTC) Mining company Greenidge Generation has significantly reduced its debt with the investment management firm, New York Digital Investment Group (NYDIG).
